The Princess of Wales's Traditional Festive Carol Concert Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of carols, music and readings from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The theme of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own steady comeback to official duties subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians backed by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the charity, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," the musician remarked. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for local food charities.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett helping to make them.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
